Wedding Dress Disposal
Wedding Dress Disposal: So what are you going to do with your wedding dress once it has been disguarded for the “going away outfit” or evening party dress? Some brides think ahead and have it in mind to keep their wedding dress - perhaps to pass it onto their daughter. Others have not given it any thought at all, but you should – here’s why.
Wedding Dress Disposal – Preparation For Storage.
After your wedding day you need to make arrangements for:
- someone to take charge of its safe return. Once you have changed into your evening dress/going away outfit a nominated person needs to place it in protective packaging and either take it back to their home, your parental home, or your own home.
- its dry cleaning. Either ask your nominated person to take it to the dry cleaners for you, or immediately do so upon your return from honeymoon. Not having your wedding dress cleaned will lead to staining, deterioration in the fabric, mould and possibly holes. Such spoiling may occur from your deodorant, dropped food, dirt caught in the hem line and train, damp patches from drink spills, moisture from wet floor surfaces or walking across grass, etc.
- its storage. Depending upon the dress material storage recommendations may vary. Get expert advice from your dry cleaners, dress maker, or place of purchase. At the same time consider if you have enough room to hang your dress in a wardrobe or does it have to be packed away? Due to limited space the majority of brides pack their wedding dress away. Any container should be sealed so that moths, silver fish, etc. cannot get in to do any damage. Similarly such a container should not allow any moisture in.
Wedding Dress Disposal – What Are My Options?
You may decide to keep your dress to :
- pass it on to family
- re-use the material or use as fancy dress
- remodel and dye to use as a ball gown
But if not you may consider:
- selling or auctioning (local advertising, eBay, etc.)
- donating it to a charity shop, local drama society or museam
- trading it in to a bridle hire shop or second hand shop
If you are not going to keep your wedding dress, dispose of it quickly. Why? It will loose value and continue to do so until it is not worth anything at all. This is due to the rapid change in fashions, and materials and colours falling in and out of favour.
