Wedding Allergies
Wedding Allergies: a strange subject you may think, but nonetheless a serious subject to consider! We have all seen the advertisement where the bride goes to smell her flowers and ends up sneezing for the rest of the day. Then there was the groom who could not stop itching all over! However, even if you do not suffer from any allergies you may have family members or close friends who you wish to attend your wedding that do.
Wedding Allergies: What You Need To Consider
It may be relevant for you to bear in mind some of the following. The list is not intended to be exhaustive, but to act as a prompt. Action is usually only required when you know (a) the allergy could prevent someone attending your wedding who you wish to attend, or, (b) the individual is likely to suffer a serious, or fatal, reaction if they come into contact with the thing they are allergic to. Consider the following wedding allergies -
Catering:
- food allergies, e.g. nuts, seafood, lactose intolerant, etc.
- preservative allergies, e.g. to MSG
- food colouring allergies
Fabrics:
- wool allergies
Flowers:
- pollen allergies
- sap allergies
- allergies to insect’s mass flowers/blooms attract
-
Transport:
- allergies to animals, e.g. horses
Venue:
- dust allergies
- feathers
- all of the above
Wedding Allergies: Solutions
Catering:
- go for a buffet providing a range of dishes and choices
- indicate on your menu any trace elements
- find out from your caterers if they can accommodate special diets
Fabrics:
- check carefully what you are buying and do not succumb to being a fashion victim which will ruin your day
Flowers:
- have artificial flowers, e.g. silk
- do not have flowers, e.g. instead of a bouquet hold a bible or rosary
- make a chocolate fountain or ice sculpture your centerpiece
- consider alternative table settings, e.g. gold fish in a bowl
- decorate with palms lit with fairy lights
Transport:
- forget the horse and carriage but hire transport that reflects your personalities, e.g. fire engine, motor-bike and sidecar, hot air balloon, vintage car, double decker bus, etc. Dependent upon your allergy you may have to exclude open-air transport.
Venue:
Generally speaking well maintained venues should not pose problems. There may, however, be certain environments that are not conducive to you that you may choose to avoid, for example: a barn dance with bales of freshly cut hay, dust, etc. or, getting married under a fragrant rose arbor.
Wedding Allergies: Finding Out
I have made an assumption that you will be aware of your, your partners, and close families and friends allergies. However, if you are choosing a predominantly seafood menu, for example, you may wish to check it is suitable for all. Outside of this group I do not think it is necessary to make further enquiry. You have to work on the premise that individuals have to take responsibility for themselves and that includes the management of their allergies in different settings/situations. Having read this I hope you do not have any wedding allergies!
