Theme Weddings

Theme Weddings: if you take everything you read as gospel (!), are the latest craze. (Personally I believe they have never been in or out of vogue.) Like most fads they come and go once all the variations upon a theme have been exhausted. Currently with “Bollywood” - east meets west, taking us by storm in the cinemas, cultural and heritage weddings are back in favour, or perhaps we are just noting them where they were once ignored.

Theme weddings are often confused with destination weddings. Click here for destination weddings. Indeed they may overlap, but there is also the notion of being transported into “another world”, perhaps donning “fancy” dress, experiencing different smells and tastes, and national dances. Having decided upon a theme, wedding couples I have spoken to say, the planning process became much easier. However, if you are a perfectionist, it can be a little tricky tracking down some authentic items.

Theme Weddings fall into the following categories

- Animals, etc, themes:
§ the bride and groom feature their pets, perhaps as ring bearers
§ animal lovers invite their guests to bring well behaved pets
§ a flock of doves are released
§ butterflies are released
§ you get married at the zoo
§ you get married in a wild life park
§ you marry over a blacksmith’s anvil
§ you marry on horseback

- Celestial themes:
§ Star Wars
§ the Planets (Holst)
§ outer space, sun, moon, stars,
§ birth signs

- Country and Western themes:
§ barn dance, spit roast
§ rodeo (bucking bronco)

- Cultural and Heritage themes:
§ Asian/Thai with orchids, shoji, Zen, fortune cookies, rice paper
§ Chinese with chopsticks, lanterns, fireworks/firecrackers
§ Japanese with fans, bonsai trees, Buddha’s
§ Hawaiian with floral shirts and lei
§ Irish with a fiddler and dance caller
§ Polish (wear national dress)
§ Indian “Bollywood” style (sitars, cultural music, seductive dances)

- Gourmet & Gastromic Feasts theme:
§ marry in a winery, treat your guests to a wine tasting
§ hire a renowned chef for your gourmet delights

- Fantasy themes:
§ Disney: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White
§ fairy tales
§ Harry Potter
§ mythical

- Fower(s) themes:
§ daisy (make daisy chain headdresses for your flower girls)
§ lavender (also have scented favours and colours)
§ lilies (have a beautiful water feature)
§ roses (have a rose perfume made for your guests, line the aisle with rose petals)

- Historic and Heritage themes: You will need to find a location, or create your own. Search for a local listed buildings and national heritage parks.
§ middle ages/medieval feasts
§ renaissance
§ Victorian
§ 1920’s, 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s. 60’s. 70’s, 80’s etc
§ “swingers”, big band music
§ futuristic

- Holiday and Seasonal themes:
§ Christmas (mulled wine, mistletoe, red, white and green)
§ Easter (Easter Bunny, chocolate)
§ “Fall” – Autumn (yummy breads, corn dollies, rich golds and oranges)
§ Halloween (pumpkins, trick and treat favours, superstitions)
§ Spring (the “Rite of Spring”, new beginnings)
§ Valentine (14th, love eternal)
§ Winter (ice sculptures, snow, faux fur, log fires, cinnamon)

- Miscellaneous themes:
§ angels
§ cartoon characters, e.g. Simpson’s
§ get married by “Elvis”
§ Gothic (ghouls, ghosts, and your imagination)
§ hire a fun fair and create your own wonderland
§ hobby theme
§ Las Vegas (casino style, with toy money, hire baccarat tables, etc.)
§ masked ball, Venetian style
§ movies, e.g. Casablanca (Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart)
§ nudists (aux natural, or some body spray painting to preserve some modesty)
§ punks and rockers
§ sports stars
§ teddy bears (teddy bear picnic in a woodland glade)

- Out door themes:
§ parks and gardens (rose covered gazebos, fragrant arbors)
§ lakes and mountains (the highest point, a sweet meadow)
§ waterfalls (the fountain of youth)

- Romantic themes:
§ Romeo and Juliet, strolling minstrels, love potions
§ “New Romantic”, champagne and candles/floating candles

- Seaside themes:
§ beach (sand, sea and sunsets)
§ cruise (Mediterranean, West Indies, Virgin Islands)
§ destination (the world’s your oyster)
§ tropical (just run your eye along the equator)
§ under the sea (submarine, scuba diving, snorkeling)
