Let’s take the example of an Arabian Knights themed wedding and how to achieve it on a minimum budget. First, it is not necessary to have original silk Arabian carpets in authentic Bedouin tents, camels and horses tethered around a palm shaded watering hole, with sounds of the dessert night.
- if hiring a marquee is out of the question and the weather forecast is fine, hold your feast under the stars
- alternatively you may be able to borrow a gazebo type tent to use as a center focal point for the bride and groom to sit beneath. It can be decorated with swathes of material (remnants, or sheets dyed) to create the Arabian Knight feel. For seating use carpet remnants, old blankets, etc, and have a collection of scatter cushions. Food may be served upon mats or trays.
- ask guests to bring picnic rugs with them and perhaps some plastic sheeting if the ground is damp
- check on fire regulations, you may be allowed a camp fire or two upon which to sit around, or allowed to dig a pit fire upon which to have a spit roast
- for lighting you could choose flare torches (available from most hard wear stores), lanterns, or tea lights in protective glass containers
- spicy incense could add to the atmosphere
- ask guests to dress up in Arabian Knight consumes
- have a portable cassette/dvd player and play some authentic Middle Eastern music

To begin with, research a couple of themes:
- search the web
- search through magazines and start a scrapbook of ideas
- go to the library and make notes or sketches of ideas
- start a list of people who may be able to contribute, e.g. who has a large tent, the amateur dramatics society props department
- find out the availability of various products you may wish to purchase
- look into possible venues and amenities available
- check for venues rules/regulations and if permits are required e.g. for a fire
Having researched a couple of themes, there will be one that stands out as being most realistically achievable given your budget.

You may decide to have more than one theme. This lends itself to a large country house setting where different rooms may be decorated in different ways and if necessary where marquees may be erected.
One couple I knew could not agree upon the music they wanted, so they had an Eighties Disco theme in the cellars, a Classical Viennese Waltz theme in the ball room and a Rock and Roll theme in a marquee.

- inject some fun and erect a coconut shy, prizes need not be expensive
- serve drinks out of coconuts
