Once you have done this, unless the Groom is planning a surprise journey, you both need to sit down and ask yourselves some basic questions. Traditionally, because the Bride makes all the other wedding preparations, the planning falls to the Groom, including the costs. However, most couples these days simply share the costs.

- to have sunshine or snow?
- to learn something new together?
- to go on an adventure holiday or participate in extreme sports?
- to do something lively or have a lazy time, or a mixture of both?

- to go on an all-inclusive resort, or a trip tailored for just the two of you?

The Timing of Your Honeymoon

You will need to book as soon as possible if your wedding is in peak season. Remember, peak season may mean: school holidays, high tariffs, crowds and queues, so advance bookings are essential in order not to be disappointed. Some peak season/ school holiday times are:

- African Safaris: December is the best climate in Kenya
- Australia: December & January – summer holidays, February – usually too hot, avoid Easter
- China: Chinese New Year in February
- Europe: July & August – summer holidays, avoid Easter
- Thai region: avoid the rains June to August
- United States: National Holiday 4th July, August & September summer break

Always check on Bank Holidays, time changes i.e. day light saving, different time zones, international sporting events e.g. Olympics, soccer world cup, and remember Christmas in any country is usually booked a couple of years in advance.

Grooms, if you are planning a surprise honeymoon, ensure you are aware of your Bride’s expectations. Then you should give your Bride a clue as to what to pack. Check your passports are valid and have the necessary entry visas. Check your inoculations are up to date for the country(s) you are visiting. Buy your tickets in advance and ensure their safekeeping. Check you have the appropriate insurance, including medical insurance.
