DIY Wedding Transport

DIY Wedding Transport: by this I mean supplying your own transport to convey the bridal party, motorized or otherwise, to the wedding ceremony and thereafter. This is one way you may reduce your wedding costs but this should be given careful consideration. The idea is that you should not incur any transportation costs, or if you do how to keep them to a minimum.

DIY Wedding Transport: Options

Using their own cars:

- the best man to drive the groom to the wedding ceremony
- the bride’s father to drive the bride, the bride’s mother and chief bridesmaid to the wedding ceremony
- another nominated family member (s) to drive the rest of the bridal party
Or
- the bride and groom to travel together to the wedding ceremony
- the bridal party to be responsible for their own transport
Or, use other available means of transport at your disposal
- motor cycle and side car
- horse and wagon (if you have friends who have one)
- UTE/camper van/RV
Alternatively
- use public transport
- book a taxi, or taxi mini-bus, or coach
- walk

All these options will be cheaper than hiring vintage cars, or limos. However, I would suggest for safety reasons alone that the bride does not travel by motorbike.

DIY Wedding Transport: Preparing Your Car

If you have been asked and agreed to provide transport for the bride and/or groom, it is not necessary to don a chauffeur’s uniform, but bear in mind the following:

- wash/polish you car and hover/polish inside, alternatively
- you may have your car regularly valeted
- ensure your tank is full of petrol
- ensure you breakdown membership is up to date
- ensure your service record/MOT is up to date
- ensure you have current car tax
- ensure you have a current license to drive
- ensure all objects are removed from the car and boot clear to fit in any suitcases
- ensure you have a large umbrella in case of rain
- ensure you have a torch if parked at night in an unlit area
- you may wish to buy some ribbon to decorate the bonnet of your car
- you may wish to place a flower arrangement (fake/fresh) on the back ledge of your car

DIY Wedding Transport: Other Considerations

- ensure you do not drink and drive
- ensure you are familiar with the routes to and from the various venues
- ensure you have small change for tolls
- ensure you are familiar with the availability of car parking at the venues
- you may choose to put together a mini-disaster kit, anything from elastoplasts to a needle and thread, or bottle of water
- if either the bride or groom is asthmatic ensure he/she gives you have a spare inhaler, or remind them to have one to hand
- ensure the bride or groom gives you any other emergency medication with instructions on how to administer, or remind them to have it to hand

DIY Wedding Transport: Hire Options

If you cannot go totally the DIY route then consider hiring a mini bus or coach. At the end of the day this will still be much cheaper than formal wedding transportation.
