DIY Wedding Invitations

DIY Wedding Invitations are an excellent way to reduce your wedding costs and put the monies saved towards your life together as man and wife. In addition you may wish to have DIY place cards, menus, thank you cards, service sheets, etc. With just a little imagination you may be able to produce something quite unique.

How To Produce Your DIY Wedding Invitations:

There are a couple of simple rules to enable you to do this:

(i) use black ink for your text/printing
(ii) your card designs do not have to be the same (apart from the text)
(iii) the plainer and simpler the better if you are not particularly arty
(iv) link in your colour theme, through either the paper, ribbon, etc into your card
(v) if having a large number of wedding guests allow sufficient time to produce all the cards you need
(vi) produce a template for yourself and that others may follow
(vii) always purchase a few extra /materials cards, to allow for prototypes and any mistakes, etc.

Decide What Your Forte Is:

When deciding upon the design of your DIY wedding invitations work out if you have any artistic or other talents you can utilize. For example:

- calligraphy
- origami
- collage
- desktop publishing knowledge
- creative on a computer
- painting
- drawing/sketching

Alternatively do you have a friend who may assist you? If you do not have a computer, I suspect that you will have a friend who does. Alternatively, you may have access at work – but get clearance to use it for purposes other than work in your lunch hour. If you are not creative you may buy the paper/ card you like and still do your own printing. Alternatively you may wish to scan a design or picture onto your card.

Printing Options:

Printing options for your DIY wedding invitations are as follows:

- use your computer and printer
- use your computer, get access to a high quality printer/zerox machine
- ask your local paper (they usually produce their issues in-house)
- buy a DIY printing kit e.g. from Wal-Mart
- avoid catalogues they’re expensive!

Other Considerations When Making Your DIY Wedding Invitations:

- buy your envelopes from a dollar store. Search in stationers for end of season, end of batch, or end of line bargains.
- for collages collect odd bits of coloured paper, crepe, tissue, etc. months in advance and ask your friends/neighbours to do the same for you
- for a themed wedding, e.g. beach, use sand and tiny shells. For evening cocktails buy some dress up feather boas. Using a black and white silhouette of a couple on your card, dismantle the feather boa and place pieces as a decoration, e.g. for a fan, or headdress, flowers, etc. For outdoor/garden theme, use pressed flowers and petals for your design.
- cut out paper hearts to place inside your card
- if you have children, get them to design your card/draw a picture that you may use

Now I believe you should be set to experiment with making your own invitations. Don’t give up! Just remember the old adage, “Patience is a virtue ………”. There are many DIY wedding invitation kits on the market, but these could end up just as expensive as going to the printers.
