DIY Wedding Favors

DIY Wedding Favors, or Bonbonnieres, are easy to do, even for the least arts and crafty person. Even if you are not DIY’ing anything else, it is a way of giving a very personal touch to your wedding. It is one that guests will appreciate, particularly if the wedding favour is accompanied by a hand written note from the bride and/or groom.

Traditional DIY Wedding Favors:

Traditional favors are a small bag of sugared almonds. (For luck an odd number should always be given, e.g. 5 or 7.) To make your favours you will need the following:

Purchase:

sufficient packets of sugared almonds to allow 5 or 7 per guest
OR
buy ingredients to make your own sugared almonds (see recipe below)
ribbon to match your colour theme
small white plain cards or large pieces of card that can be cut to size (optional if not writing a note)
white tulle

Have to hand:

two round templates, first 18 cm diameter, second 22 cm in diameter
scissors
hole-punch

Instructions To Make DIY Wedding Favors:

- cut out an equal number of round circles from the tulle
- cut or use pre-cut cards to write your message on
- put a hole-punch in the corner of the card
- thread the card onto the ribbon
- place larger round equal distance over the small round of tulle
- place the sugared almonds in the middle
- gather the tulle around the sugared almonds
- wrap the ribbon around to secure contents
- finish by tying the ribbon in a bow
- (optional: if ribbon is to be curled, firmly run the ribbon along the edge of one scissor blade)

Recipe For Sugared Almonds DIY Wedding Favors:

Ingredients:
1 cup of sugar
1/3 cup of water
1 cup of blanched almonds
(1 cup = 4 oz = 100 g) (1 cup = 300 fluid ml)

In a saucepan dissolve the sugar in the water. Bring to the boil at 240 degrees F. Mix in the blanched almonds, taking off the heat before they stick together. Place on a plate or tin to cool and set.

Second coating:
1 cup of sugar
1/3 cup of water

Repeat as above, again ensuring the almonds do not stick. This process will have to be repeated in its entirety to make enough almonds for all your guests.

Alternative Recipe
1 cup (375 g) of blanched almonds
1/3 cup (150 g) of icing/confectioners sugar
1 egg white

Beat together the sugar and egg white. Add the almonds to the mixture, coat well. Spread out on a wooden board to dry. Repeat this process until there are enough almonds for 5 or 7 per guest.
